The sculpture Letter Network is a commissioned work from ‘Det Frie Gymnasium’. The history of the building, ‘METROPOLITANSKOLEN’ (METROPOLITANSCHOOL) has roots back to a bleak novel - ‘The Neglected Spring’ by the danish author Hans Scherfig. The Free High School/Det Frie Gymnasium wanted to free itself from the narrative of an authoritarian school system, and emphasize the student democratic foundation of The Free High School/Det Frie Gymnasium.
Based on the school's desire to distance itself from the former authoritarian culture, the task was to create a sculpture integrating the building's pre existing capital letters in cast iron (METROPOLITAN-SKOLEN) together with the school's current name and URL (detfriegymnasium@dk) in CNC-shaped thin steel.
In collaboration with the school's students, emerged the idea of mixing the letters, from ‘the old’ and ‘the new’ school, in a jumble of uppercase and lowercase letters. Thus, the letters appear from both past and present, leaving a mixed, not hierarchical, letter pattern for free inspiration and formation of new words and meanings.
12 large oak blocks were scattered around the sculpture, enabling the sculpture to function as a social and literary focal point for the students in the school yard. The mesh on which the letters are attached also acts as a trellis overgrown with clematis plants, which bloom in the spring and summer months as the pupils graduates.
